 Ayatullah Lankarani who was one of the leading clerics in Iran and the Muslim world passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 76. He was previously hospitalized in Tehran due to his bad health conditions. Ayatullah Lankarani was one of the forerunners of the Islamic Republic in its anti-imperialist policies and he had been teaching at many Islamic seminaries and schools for years. He condemned the US occupational forces in Iraq for the bombing of the holy shrines of Shia Imams in Samara just days before his demise.
Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayed Ali Khamenei Saturday expressed grief at the sad demise of this prominent Islamic jurisprudential authority.
The text of the condolence message is as follows:
Bismillah Rahman Rahim,
To Allah we belong, and to Him is our return,
I became profoundly grieved and sad to realize that the Mujahid jurisprudent the honorable Ayatollah Mr. Fazel Lankarani, may Allah's consent be conferred on him, was passed away.
It bears a heavy tragedy for (Qom's) Jurisprudence Center as well as the Iranian noble nation.
The Jurisprudence Center has lost one of its prominent research and scientific figures and an eminent scholar. The Iranian nation for its part lost an aware, illustrious revolutionary jurisprudential authority.
During the long years of suppression (of the pre-revolutionary regime), he stood among those distinguished people in the Jurisprudence Center who kept presence in different fields of struggle and braved the ordeal of banishment and following the revolution stood among the well-known Alims who delivered some key part in every sensitive juncture. May God's mercy be upon him.
I console the great loss to the honorable Baqiatollah, may our souls be sacrificed to him, as well as the great jurisprudential authorities, distinguished Alims, prominent religious scholars, the revered Jurisprudence Center's students and the Iranian nation at large.
I also sympathize with the revered family, honorable sons and other surviving members and relatives of the deceased and pray the Almighty God to confer patience on them.
